About this tour

Looking to escape the crowds and discover something truly ancient and awe-inspiring? This private day tour from Dún Laoghaire Cruise Port brings you deep into Ireland’s mythological past – with a twist. Instead of the busy visitor centre at Newgrange, we’ll take you to Loughcrew Cairns: a hidden gem of the Neolithic world that many never get to experience.

Highlights

  • Loughcrew Cairns
  • Trim Castle
  • Fore Abbey
  • Hill of Tara
  • Bective Abbey
  • Loughcrew Gardens & Coffee Stop

What to expect

  1. Stop 1: Collection and Drop-off

We’ll collect you directly from your ship at Dún Laoghaire Cruise Terminal or place of stay in the City centre, and ensure you return in good time for embarkation. No stress, no crowds – just your own private Irish journey.

  2. Stop 2: Loughcrew Cairns – The Soul of the Megalithic Age

Perched atop a sweeping hill with 360° views over five counties, the Loughcrew Cairns (also known as Slieve na Calliagh) are some of Ireland’s oldest and most sacred monuments – even older than the Pyramids. Cairn T, the central tomb, dates back over 5,000 years and is aligned with the rising sun during the equinox, illuminating its chamber with mystical precision. Inside the passage tomb, you’ll find rare megalithic art carved into the stones – spiral motifs, suns, and cosmic symbols that hint at a complex spiritual world. Unlike Newgrange, Loughcrew offers a quiet, uncrowded experience, where you can stand alone with the stones and feel the ancient presence that still lingers here. The short hike to the summit is well worth it – not just for the archaeological marvel, but for the panoramic views that make it one of the most spectacular spots in the Boyne Valley.

  3. Stop 3: As with all our private tours, your route can be customized along the way. Here are some example stops we often include

Trim Castle – Ireland’s largest Anglo-Norman castle, and a filming location for Braveheart. Explore its imposing walls or take a short walk along the River Boyne. Fore Abbey – A serene medieval monastic site nestled in a peaceful valley, known for its “Seven Wonders” and beautiful ruins. Hill of Tara – Seat of the High Kings of Ireland and a powerful spiritual site with views across the Boyne Valley. Bective Abbey – Atmospheric Cistercian ruins ideal for photography and a quick wander. Loughcrew Gardens & Coffee Stop – Optional visit to the 17th-century gardens nearby, with a tearoom for refreshments. Slane Castle & Distillery – For those with a taste for whiskey or rock history, this makes a perfect last stop. Your guide will work with you on the day to adjust the route as needed to make the most of your time.

Questions

Is Loughcrew a good alternative to Newgrange?

Yes—fewer crowds, stunning views, and a remarkable passage tomb experience when access allows.

It’s a steady uphill grass path of about 10–15 minutes; sturdy shoes help.

Do we go inside the passage tomb?

Access is weather and OPW‑dependent; your guide will advise on the day.

What other sites pair well with Loughcrew?

Trim Castle, Fore Abbey, and the Boyne Valley are excellent additions with extra time.

How long is the drive from Dublin?

Roughly 1 hour 20 minutes each way, traffic permitting.
